And we’re back for another! Last time I went over how I made the Arcade Sona weapon, this time its about her hair! The wig is fairly easy to do, it just takes time to let the paint seep into the wig, and then styling it to the desired look.
Now to review how the champion looks,
Her hair has 2 hues to it with a middle spot where the two colors meet, blending into another color. I picked 2 colors to go with, a sky blue color and a bright bubble pink color.
Now there are multiple ways to dye the wig. I did my research on it and learned that there are different types of wigs that you can get: one with human hair, or one that is synthetic.
If you have a wig that has human hair, then you would dye it the way you would with a regular hair. With that I would recommend manic panic semi-permanent hair dye. They having AMAZING pigment, and when they fade, they still look really good. Artic Fox has also been another hair dye that I love as well. The colors just comes out super vibrant, last a while, and doesn’t look too bad when they are fading in-between the next coloring period. For Arcade Sona I would recommend https://amzn.to/4d2AmDa (Manic Panic) or https://amzn.to/3XD93uH (Artic Fox) for the blue and https://amzn.to/4ghBp5d (Manic Panic) or https://amzn.to/47u35Qf (Artic Fox) for the pink.
Synthetic wigs on the other hands are different as they are plastic and cannot withstand the same pressure as human hair can. With synthetic wigs you can dye it a variety of ways. I heard you can dye it as you would with clothing, but I chose not to do that. I opted to use FW ink to color my wigs. You can get FW ink at https://amzn.to/3XDkfrr. I chose the fluorescent blue and pink for this cosplay.
Another method that you can use instead is using sharpie pens. The process with both FW ink and sharpie pens are very similar so it depends on what you prefer to use.
With both methods, you mix the sharpie pen or FW ink with the rubbing alcohol in the spray bottle. With a sharpie pen you would grab the ink out of the pen and drop it into a bottle of rubbing alcohol, let it mix then use on the wig.
With FW ink, you fill the spray bottle with rubbing alcohol, then drop 12-20 drops of FW ink (it comes with a dropper attached to the cap) into the bottle, stir the bottle gently until the color is distributed evenly before using. I started with less drops of FW ink first then add more as you see fit to get the desired color I wanted which made it more tedious, but it helped me make sure I wasn’t putting too much color onto the wig.
Once the color has mixed with the alcohol well, you warm the wig (I did it with a hair dryer) then spray the dye to the wig. Make sure to get in-between the hair strands to ensure that they are all colored.
Then you let it sit and dry to see how well the color looks, and recolor any areas that are missed or needs more color to make sure the coating is even. Once done, you brush the wig and style the wig to the desired hair style.
